According to research by Backlinko, the number one result in Google's organic search results has an average click-through rate (CTR) of 27.6%. The first result listing is also 10x more likely to receive a click compared to the listing in the number 10 spot on the search results page. Keyword research is about finding what searches people complete on Google and choosing the searches or queries you want to rank for.

So, what is a keyword?

A keyword is a search term, and there are two types:

  • Short tail keyword (a.k.a. head terms): broad topics with high search volumes, like "mountain bicycle."
  • Long tail keyword: specific topics with lower search volumes, like "best mountain bicycle for women."

How do you do keyword research?

There are a variety of tools that can help you with keyword research. Here are a few we would recommend:

  • Google Keyword Planner: A free tool provided by Google Ads that helps you discover new keywords and assess their search volume and competition. It's great for identifying potential keywords to target in your campaigns.
  • SEMrush: A comprehensive tool that provides keyword research along with competitor analysis, helping you identify which keywords are working well for your competitors.
  • Moz: Moz offers a suite of SEO tools, including Keyword Explorer, which provides insights into keyword volume, difficulty, organic click-through rates, and keyword opportunities.
  • Ahrefs: Known for its powerful backlink analysis, Ahrefs also offers robust keyword research tools to help you understand keyword difficulty, search volume, and more.

When choosing the right keywords, it's important to consider both search volume and competition. High search volume keywords are often very competitive, making it harder to rank for them. Now that you have optimized everything you possibly can, it's time to see how your efforts stack up. Let's answer some questions that are probably going through your head.

Did my website traffic increase? First, you'll want to take a look at your organic traffic in Google Analytics to see the total number of visits to your site from your search. This can tell you right away how things are going. If you see an increase, that's great!

Did I start ranking for my keywords? Second, you'll want to use a keyword tool to check your rankings. The tools we mentioned earlier, like Moz, will show you your current ranking week by week for the keywords you're tracking.

Am I getting a good click-through rate on my site? You know how much traffic your keyword gets, so you may wonder if you are capturing a good chunk of this traffic. You'll want to look at your click-through rate to answer this question. You can find this metric in Google Search Console. If your site is seen 1,000 times in the SERP and 100 people click on it, your CTR is 10%.

Are people having a good experience on my site? To answer this question, you want to look at your bounce rate. You can find your bounce rate in Google Analytics. Bounce rate is the percentage of people who land on your site and leave without engaging. If you're seeing a high bounce rate, this may mean that your content doesn't match what users are looking for from that specific search query, or you may have some technical difficulties preventing users from having a good experience.

How Long Does It Take to See SEO Results?

Many factors will impact how quickly you see results, such as the age of your site, your strategy, and the competition. SEO is ongoing and always changing. You may start seeing small changes in the first couple of weeks, but it may take three to six months to see results.

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Google developed this standard to further protect users from harm, especially for content that covers "Your Money or Your Life" topics. These topics affect a user's well-being. Revising your content to follow this framework can help ensure better quality.

Technical SEO Issues

When we encounter sites that aren't performing well, we always start by checking them on Google's Page Speed tool. This tool will tell us right away if there are technical errors that need to be fixed. We also look for an XML sitemap to ensure Google can easily interpret the site. Lastly, make sure pages are not marked as "no index." Google cannot crawl or read webpages that are marked as no index.
